Reevaluating America's Role in the Israel-Palestine Conflict: Where are the American Values?

Updated: Nov 27, 2023

The Israel-Palestine conflict, marked by its long and tumultuous history, has recently intensified, bringing immense suffering and instability to the region. At the heart of international discourse is the United States' approach under President Biden's leadership. Characterized by unwavering support for Israel, especially through significant military aid, Biden's policy has raised critical questions about its alignment with the core American values of justice, human rights, and balanced diplomacy.

Let's take a closer look at President Biden's stance. Since the resurgence of violence in October 2023, the U.S. has firmly stood by Israel, even in the wake of actions that have led to significant Palestinian civilian casualties and widespread destruction in Gaza. For instance, the U.S. continued its support following the devastating bombing of a hospital in Gaza, which claimed over 3,300 lives. This support isn't new; it's a continuation of America's long-standing policy of providing Israel with substantial military assistance. But what's troubling here is the imbalance: while Israel's right to defend itself is emphasized, there's a glaring lack of accountability for the humanitarian consequences of its actions, which heavily impact Palestinian civilians. This one-sided approach raises serious questions about the ethical implications of the U.S.'s involvement in the conflict.

Looking back, the U.S. has always played a significant role in the Israel-Palestine conflict, traditionally siding with Israel. However, what makes Biden's policy stand out is the context in which it is being applied – a time when the conflict has escalated, and the need for a balanced approach is more crucial than ever. While previous U.S. administrations have also supported Israel, the evolution of the Middle East's geopolitical landscape today calls for a more nuanced approach, one that truly reflects America's commitment to justice and the protection of human rights.

The way the world sees America is also at stake here. By strongly backing Israel, the U.S. risks tarnishing its global image as a champion of human rights. This one-sided policy has not gone unnoticed by the international community, including the UN, and has invited criticism from various corners of the world. Additionally, the active involvement of other global powers, such as Russia and China, who are attempting to mediate, further challenges the U.S.'s standing as a balanced and fair player in international diplomacy.

Meanwhile, there's a moral question that we can't ignore. Is it right for the U.S., a nation that prides itself on upholding human rights and justice, to support actions that lead to civilian suffering? This support places the U.S. in an ethical conundrum, as it seemingly contradicts the country's foundational principles and its role as a global leader in promoting peace and human rights.

So, what can be done differently? The U.S. could pivot towards a more diplomatic approach, one that equally addresses Israeli security and Palestinian rights. Facilitating dialogue, encouraging trust-building measures, and advocating for a fair resolution that recognizes the aspirations and needs of both sides could pave the way for a more peaceful future. The goal here should be a balanced role for the U.S., not just as an ally to Israel, but also as a beacon of hope for a peaceful resolution in the region.

In summary, the current U.S. policy towards the Israel-Palestine conflict, particularly its impact on Gaza, calls for a serious reevaluation. To align with the American values of justice, human rights, and balanced diplomacy, a shift in approach is crucial. It's time for policies that not only reflect America's ideals but also contribute constructively to the resolution of this long-standing conflict.

Your post provides a lot of interesting insight into American participation in the war, and America has consistently participated in intervention that sparks debate among the international community. Although America likes to promote the idea of intervening to protect democracy, there are also instances where we don't step in and provide our support (albeit questionably) for countries going through conflict. With that, it could be valuable to also consider what variety of factors motivate the US to participate in conflict, and what our true intentions are.

I think that looking towards human rights on both ends would allow for a calmer end to the war. I think that while America wants to look like they are a purveyor of human rights, in reality they have caused many atrocities throughout time. The US is prioritizing money and status over the rights of non US citizens. I think the American values of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are being infringed upon. While Americans do not really have shared values as individuality is prioritized I think you bring up some strong points in this blog post. I wonder if you have any updates as things have changed in the past few weeks.
